Macular disease experts accept new positions

Associate Professor Alex Hunyor (pictured above) has joined the MDFA Board and Associate Professor Anthony Kwan has become Chair of MDFA’s Research Committee following the resignation of Professor Nitin Verma.

Prof Verma, who served on the MDFA Board for more than 17 years, has left his positions with MDFA to take up a new role as President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).

New Board member A/Prof Hunyor – who has worked with MDFA since 2007 and remains Chair of the Medical Committee – is a member of the Macular Research Group at the Save Sight Institute, University of Sydney.

A Clinical Associate Professor with over 20 years of experience in the treatment of macular diseases, A/Prof Hunyor has published more than 60 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and has given many lectures at local and international scientific meetings.

New Research Committee Chair A/Prof Kwan is the Director of Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Queensland Eye Institute, Director of the Queensland Electro-Diagnostic and Imaging Centre, and Senior Staff Ophthalmologist at the Mater Hospital, Brisbane.

He is also the immediate past Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists and has been working with MDFA since 2015.

“I would like to thank both A/Prof Hunyor and A/Prof Kwan for their additional commitment to our Board and Research Committee respectively,” MDFA CEO Dee Hopkins said.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank Prof Verma for his many years of service to MDFA. We wish him well in his new role as President of RANZCO, where he will continue to be a strong advocate for the macular disease community.”

Perth ophthalmologist Dr Xia Ni Wu has also joined MDFA’s Medical Committee following A/Prof Dimitri Yellachich’s resignation. MDFA thanks A/Prof Yellachich for his service.
