Assistive technology can better the lives of many people with a visual impairment, ranging from those with low vision to no vision, and the computer whizzes to those that fear smartphones.
In this webinar, we will explore different means of accessing visual information or content in alternative ways, using technology. We will start by looking at screen readers, which allow people with limited or no vision to listen to and interact with content on a screen. We will then look at other text-to-speech technology. Next, we’ll explore the use of shortcuts via the keyboard and virtual assistants. Lastly, we’ll look at some assistive technology apps.

About the presenter
Abby Jayasuriya is an Assistive Technology Specialist at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. She provides training and support on the use of assistive technology and draws on her own lived experience of having a visual impairment to obtain the best outcomes for her clients.
She has relied heavily on assistive technology herself, from when she learned to touch type in primary school, to her access of printed materials at university, and finally to the full transition of using a screen reader for work. She believes the exploration of assistive technology is a journey, and highly enjoys sharing this journey with others.
