Congratulations Dr Fred Chen
MDFA Research Grant recipient Dr Fred Chen from Lions Eye Institute (LEI), will head a new Centre of Research Excellence in juvenile macular disease, to be established in Western Australia.
Juvenile macular degeneration is one of the most common causes of legal blindness in Australian children.
Childhood blindness affects one in every 5,000 young people and has a profound impact on their educational and personal development.
Exciting new molecular, gene and cell-based therapies are being developed, but there is a lack of infrastructure to support accurate genetic diagnosis of affected children and monitoring of disease progression.
The Centre of Research Excellence is being funded with a $250,000 Telethon Perth Children’s Hospital Research Fund grant.
This time last year, Dr Chen received a $120,000 MDFA grant over two years for research into Stargardt disease, the most common inherited form of childhood macular degeneration. MDFA congratulates the Lions Eye Institute and Dr Chen on the new research centre.
