    Heads Up On Diabetes

It is National Diabetes Week and Macular Disease Foundation Australia is warning that everyone with diabetes is at risk of developing diabetic eye disease.

The most common form of diabetic eye disease is diabetic retinopathy (DR).

Diabetic retinopathy is a major cause of vision loss and blindness in working age and older Australians.

This year Diabetes Australia is running a ‘Heads Up’ campaign for National Diabetes Week. The campaign highlights the mental and emotional health impact of living with diabetes.

The constant stress of monitoring your diabeties can lead to anxiety and burnout. If you’re struggling seek help.

The longer a person has diabetes, the greater the likelihood of diabetic eye disease. However, many cases of vision loss from DR can be prevented with regular eye exams, careful management of diabetes, medication and – in some cases – treatment with injections and/or laser.

MDFA also has free fact sheets, which you can download. The fact sheet can also be mailed to you. Order online or call our National Helpline on 1800 111 709.

Free information on diabetic eye disease is also available in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Italian and Vietnamese.
